Carry a Big Stick
The ongoing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is a disaster that most humans won't be able to wrap their heads around because visualizing the quantity of oil involved, the scale of the damage it will do, and the long term effects it will have on that environment is not something any of us are well equipped to do. Perhaps if you're an astronomer who deals with large distances and vast bodies, or a geologist who deals in scales of time measured in the epoch, the gravity of this spill can properly sink in and spark outrage, but for most of us this is just a very large number chewing a hole in a part of the world we've never been and aren't likely to go—especially now. And that's okay because this is not the kind of thing your parents were expecting to have to prepare you for. You're not a bad person if you don't really have a sense of the monstrosity of the damage done. You might be a bad person, however, if you can't recognize that BP has a corporate culture that needs to be encased in concrete and pushed overboard above the Laurentian Abyss. Which is why I'd like you to all go read this brief comment by the gentleman behind the twitter feed of @BPGlobalPR. Then you should follow @BPGlobalPR and buy one of his excellent "BP cares" shirts. How often do you get to stick it to the man and help save the environment at the same time?
